Qur’an, Hadith, and Ecological Practice: Religious Values in the Climate Village Program in Central Java, Indonesia
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, faces significant environmental and climate-related risks, requiring community-based approaches that integrate ecological and socio-religious resources. This study examines how Islamic theological values derived from the Qur’an and Hadith are integrated into the Climate Village Program (Program Kampung Iklim/ProKlim) and translated into community ecological action. Addressing the limited empirical understanding of how religious values move from normative teachings to collective environmental practices, this qualitative field study was conducted at two ProKlim sites in Central Java: Ngadirejo, Solo, and Ngaliyan, Semarang. Data were collected through direct observation of community greening and water-management activities and interviews with program participants and relevant stakeholders. The findings show that Islamic values operate through three interconnected processes: religious interpretation, motivational internalization, and practical enactment. Qur’anic and Hadith-based values are invoked to frame environmental care as a moral and religious responsibility, motivate participation in greening and water-management activities, and reinforce collective commitment to maintaining ecological resources. Rather than functioning merely as abstract theological principles, these values are embedded in everyday community practices and become social resources for sustaining participation in ProKlim. The study contributes empirically by demonstrating how Islamic environmental ethics are translated into collective ecological practices within two community-based climate initiatives. Contribution: Theoretically, it advances the concept of religious values as lived religious resources that mediate the relationship between theological meaning, community participation, and ecological action, thereby extending scholarship on Islam, lived religion, and community-based climate resilience.
