Towards safe and just plural futures: Co-created Transformation Pathways
Year: 2026
Type: report
Abstract: This workshop report documents the proceedings of the Earth Commission 2.0 Transformation Pathways Workstream working meeting held February 10–11, 2026, at the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC), Sweden. The workshop brought together 21 participants (researchers, case study leads, and domain experts) to develop systematic analytical frameworks for understanding transformation pathways toward safe and just futures. The report outlines key conceptual developments and working definitions of transformation pathways, reviews trait-based and action-based analytical approaches, and synthesizes discussions around justice, desirability, and the plurality of viable transformation routes. To do so, the group gathered 34 qualitative narrative pathways derived from 10 visioning processes spanning terrestrial, marine, and urban social-ecological systems across multiple geographies and scales. Major outputs include the introduction of "transformative threads" and "pockets" as analytical concepts, a pedigree assessment rubric for pathway quality, and a collaborative research agenda comprising multiple proposed academic contributions focused on perspectives, justice, analytical frameworks, and evidence-building to bridge global and co-created transformation approaches.
