Application of the European Peranakan Style to Interior Design of Khoe Pek Goan Cafe Bandung

Abstract: The existence of bakeries and cafes has become part of the lifestyle of urban communities today. Khoe Pek Goan is not only a place where people go to socialize, but also to reminisce because this place has historical value. Its existence in the city of Bandung has proven that Khoe Pek Goan is a business that is growing rapidly and has reached beyond its hometown, Garut. Interior design has an important role in presenting the atmosphere of the past as a manifestation of the historical journey of Khoe Pek Goan, but also represents the present spirit of the people. Interior design is a non-physical translation of spirit, into a physical form that helps space users capture that spirit visually. This research is aimed at examining alternative interior designs that represent the historical journey of Khoe Pek Goan as well as the contemporary spirit of the current era. The method applied is a qualitative research method by considering the criteria of historical values and contemporary values represented by the European Peranakan style. By considering several relevant theories, this research shows an alternative interior design visually that represents two criteria that seem contradictory but can be combined in interior design in harmony. The results of this research show that applying the European Peranakan style is an alternative that can be applied to interior design to give a feel of the past and present at the same time
