"parasitic Interactions in Ecosystems: Host-specificity and Co-evolutionary Dynamics"

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Parasitic interactions represent a major ecological force shaping the dynamics of ecosystems. The study of host-parasite relationships has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly in terms of host-specificity and co-evolutionary processes. Parasites, which include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and helminths, engage in complex interactions with their hosts, often influencing host behavior, physiology, and population dynamics. Host-specificity, where parasites preferentially infect particular species or populations, is a key feature of many parasitic relationships. Co-evolution between parasites and hosts is a continuous process of adaptation, counter-adaptation, and selection that leads to evolutionary arms races. This paper reviews the role of host-specificity and co-evolutionary dynamics in parasitic interactions within ecosystems, drawing on examples from both natural and anthropogenic environments. By understanding these interactions, we can gain deeper insights into the evolutionary mechanisms shaping biodiversity, disease transmission, and ecosystem health. Keywords: parasitism, host-specificity, co-evolution, ecosystem dynamics, evolutionary arms race, biodiversity.
