Renewable Energy on Sustainable Development of Urban Open and Green-Space-Management in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Urban open and green spaces are vital for psychological and emotional well-being, particularly when managed sustainably with renewable energy. In Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the integration of renewable energy into green space management remains underexplored, despite its potential to enhance environmental quality and human health. This study addresses this gap by examining the benefits, challenges, and environmental impacts of renewable energy adoption in urban green spaces. The study aims to assess the benefits and challenges of renewable energy-powered green space management, evaluate its environmental sustainability, and analyze its impact on human health and environmental quality in Abuja. Primary data were collected from 75 questionnaires administered across 5 strategically selected urban open and green-space facilities and service operators in the FCT. Descriptive and statistical analyses were employed to interpret responses regarding renewable energy adoption, operational challenges, and sustainability outcomes. The study revealed that 17.3% of respondents identified improved human health and daily living as the foremost benefit of renewable energy integration. However, 21.3% cited inflation and rising operational costs as major challenges. Notably, renewable energy and sustainable practices showed no significant variation in their impact on environmental quality, underscoring their consistent benefits. The findings highlight the dual role of renewable energy in promoting health and environmental sustainability while identifying economic barriers. This research contributes to urban planning policy by advocating for cost-effective renewable energy solutions in green space management. To maximise benefits, the study recommends improved management strategies for renewable energy facilities and services in Abuja’s urban spaces. Future research should explore scalable models for mitigating economic constraints.
