LIKONA - Breeding bird occurrences in Limburg 1986-1992, Flanders, Belgium

Year: 2026
Type: dataset
Abstract: This dataset contains over 50,000 occurrence records covering 138 bird species, published by the 'Limburgse Koepel voor Natuurstudie' (LIKONA) and the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It documents the spatial distribution of breeding bird species observed across the province of Limburg (northeastern Flanders, Belgium) during monitoring efforts from 1986 until 1992. Data collection was organized by regional volunteers and coordinated under LIKONA, serving as the basis for the second comprehensive breeding bird atlas of Limburg (Gabriëls et al. 1994), in collaboration with the 'Limburgs Studiecentrum voor Ecologie' (LISEC). Field observations were generalized to a standard UTM 1x1 km grid square system to reflect breeding presence across all suitable habitats in the region. Additionally, counts for the most notable species are provided. The data collected from 1985–1992 for this second breeding bird atlas provided a unique opportunity to make a direct comparison for Limburg with the first breeding bird atlas covering the 1974–1985 period (Gabriëls 1985), whose dataset was previously published on GBIF (Gabriëls et al. 2026). The dataset has been standardized to the Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) format and is published as open data under a Creative Commons Zero (CC0 1.0) waiver in accordance with the INBO open data policy. Users are encouraged to cite the dataset following established citation norms. Questions or issues regarding the data can be submitted to the dataset contacts or via INBO open data channels.
