Managing technological change

Year: 2026
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The Sun Also Rises Elsewhere -Managers, Organizational Capital, and Firm Performance tice remains scarce. At the same time, management practices explain significant productivity differences across firms (Bloom et al., 2019;Bloom and Van Reenen, 2007), and firms with stronger practices obtain higher returns from information technology (Bloom et al., 2012).Managers also shape how workers adapt to technological change: middle managers influence training take-up during transitions (Diaz et al., 2025), and individual managers account for meaningful variation in firm performance more broadly (Bandiera et al., 2020;Bertrand and Schoar, 2003;Lazear et al., 2015).Recent theoretical work connects these findings by modeling organizational capital as a stock that leadership actively produces (Bloom et al., 2016;Dessein and Prat, 2022), but empirical evidence on how managers create and transmit this capital remains limited. This dissertation examines how information technology reshapes the organization of tasks, knowledge, and communication within firms, how managers mediate worker adaptation to technological change, and how organizational capital transfers across firms through managerial mobility.
