Emergency Care Avoidance and Delays in the United States: Scoping Review Protocol v1

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Study design: Study Protocol
Abstract: This is a protocol for a scoping review mapping the evidence on avoidance of and delays in seeking emergency care in the United States. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance with PRISMA-ScR reporting, we will search biomedical and health sciences databases and perform a focused grey literature search, covering the period since implementation of the major provisions of the Affordable Care Act in January 2014. We plan to synthesize factors associated with emergency care avoidance and delays, highlight populations that are disproportionately affected, characterize how avoidance and delay are defined and measured, and identify gaps and future directions in the literature.
