Quantum magnetism through atomic assembly

Year: 2015
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis presents an experimental study of magnetic structures, composed of only a few atoms. Those structures are first built atom-by-atom and then locally probed, both with a low-temperature STM. The technique that we use to assemble them is vertical atom manipulation, while to study their physical properties we use inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and spin-polarized STM. In this work we focus on structures made of Fe or Co atoms built on a thin insulating layer (Cu2N).
