Volunteer recruitment through personal calls and emails: Two field experiments with a Dutch political party: In two field experiments with Dutch party members, receiving a personal call from a party volunteer increased sign-ups for volunteer activities on the party website (combined via inverse covariance weighting) relative to the untreated control group, while email alone did not. The calling effect is similar for women and men and significantly larger for members aged 35 and under than for the 36–65 and 65-plus groups (between-age-group differences: Study 1, calls only: p = 0.011 and 0.002; Study 2, call-and-email: p = 0.023 and 0.002).

Volunteer recruitment through personal calls and emails: Two field experiments with a Dutch political party: In two field experiments with Dutch party members, receiving a personal call from a party volunteer increased sign-ups for volunteer activities on the party website (combined via inverse covariance weighting) relative to the untreated control group in Study 1 (ITT β = 0.037, p < 0.001) and Study 2 (ITT β = 0.074, p < 0.001). The call-and-email treatment also increased sign-ups in Study 2 (ITT β = 0.058, p < 0.001), whereas email alone had no effect (β = −0.009, p = 0.35). In Study 1, the complier average causal effect of the call among the 995 of 2,390 called members who answered the phone was β = 1.234 (SE 0.148, p < 0.001).

Volunteer recruitment through personal calls and emails: Two field experiments with a Dutch political party: European Social Survey 2023-2024 data show that political volunteering differs markedly across generations and genders in the Netherlands and five other Western European countries (CH, DE, FI, GB, NO): around 12% of people born before 1965 donated to or participated in a political party or pressure group in the past 12 months, compared to just above 6% of those born after 1995, and women are significantly less likely to volunteer than men.
