When actin's not actin like actin: Nuclear actin impacts transcription and aging
Description: Project Narrative The actin cytoskeleton has been historically studied for its functional role in the cytoplasm, although its existence in the nucleus has been identified over 50 years ago. In this proposal, we aim to study the elusive nuclear actin in multiple fields that it has never been explored before: understanding its function and consequences of its breakdown during aging, investigating how nuclear actin regulation changes during stress, and investigating the impact of nuclear actin on DNA repair and transcriptional regulation. This highly innovative proposal aims to tackle a very young and burgeoning field by developing cutting edge genetics, microscopy, biochemical, and computational tools to answer questions that were previously unanswerable.
