Estrogen and cognition over the lifespan
Description: Narrative Estradiol (E2) is protective against neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, implicating sex hormone effects on sex differences in vulnerability. The proposal addresses mechanisms for long-term E2 effects on synaptic transmission and a possible mechanism (DNA methylation) for a decline in the efficacy of hormone treatment in advanced age through epigenetic regulation of E2-responsive transcription profile.
