The Impact of the “Double Reduction Policy” on Private Supplementary Tutoring in Academic Disciplines: A Mixed Study

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigates the impact of the "Double Reduction" policy on the demand for private supplementary tutoring in academic disciplines in China. The policy, implemented to reduce the academic burden on students, has significantly regulated private supplementary tutoring institutions. However, it remains unclear whether the policy has diminished the demand for such tutoring. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a nationwide survey and interviews with parents and educators, this research explores parents' attitudes towards the policy and their continued reliance on tutoring to support their children's education. Findings reveal that while the policy has reduced the availability of tutoring services, demand persists, particularly among urban and higher-educated parents, due to persistent concerns about academic competition and educational inequality.
