Evaluating Environmental Key Performance Indicators in the Hospitality and Tourism Sector

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper assesses the actionable impact of environmental KPIs on fostering sustainability efforts in the hospitality and tourism sectors. It seeks to establish a comprehensive set of KPIs that especially aid in tracking and managing both operational efficiency and the environmental impact within the organization while also communicating sustainability to stakeholders. The methodology describes a motivational system using a single hotel to demonstrate an ecosystem for the collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental data throughout various hotel departments. Hypothetical results indicate substantial resource management, reduced environmental impact, enhanced brand reputation and industry benchmark positioning from the use of well-defined measurable KPIs. This research highlights the gaps in sustainable development and underscores the need for reliable environmentally transparent performance measurement systems in the tourism industry.
