Mapping Essential Skills for Effective Self-Learning in Education 4.0: Analysis of Student Readiness and Pedagogical Gaps

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Education 4.0 necessitates transitioning from content delivery to student-centred environments;however, disparities in student preparedness and entrenched pedagogical practices hinder effective self-directed learning, as unfocused metacognitive habits, limited collaborative skills, and recall-based assessments impede inquiry and value judgment. In this context, the study delineates essential self-learning competencies, including self-regulation, information and digital literacy, criticalthinking, adaptability, communication, collaboration, feedback literacy, and technical proficiency, while examining pedagogical deficiencies impeding their advancement. A mixed-methods literaturesynthesis, augmented by a student survey, uncovers structural discrepancies, such as inadequatescaffolding for autonomy, disjointed feedback cycles, and a scarcity of authentic, problem-basedtasks that gradually transfer responsibility. The evidence plots a consistent course; readiness isemerging in self-regulation, time management, and information literacy, but falls behind incollaboration, use of feedback, and continued adaptability. In contrast, technical proficiency at oncedrives autonomy for some and entrenches equity issues for others based on access and confidence.Drawing on these findings, the paper proposes an integrated framework with practical design levers, flipped and blended approaches, problem- and project-defined learning, team-defined constructions,Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology tools for mapping, guidance-abundant artificial intelligence, plus assessment for mastery to developevaluative judgment and self-efficacy based on alignment of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessmentas the route to transform access into agency and enhance robust learner autonomy in Education 4.0.
