Click-Through Rate (CTR): Definitions, Benchmarks, and How to Improve It (Six Lost Sources, Rescued)
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A rescue-and-synthesis reference on click-through rate (CTR). Six of the most-cited foundational references on CTR — the pieces Wikipedia editors used to anchor the discipline's basic definitions and benchmarks — have gone dead at their original URLs. iMediaConnection's 2010 piece on improving display CTR; Comm100's email-marketing eBook chapter; the Dummies.com calculation guide; Michael Leander's CTR-by-region guide; Lyris's industry-benchmark FAQ; and Econsultancy's 2012 Silverpop-data analysis are all 404 at their original locations. This article reconstructs the substance from Wayback Machine snapshots, paraphrases each source (with short quotes only, respecting original authors' copyright), and combines the data points with operator notes from 13 years of running paid-media and email programmes. The result is a single canonical reference covering: the three different CTR definitions used across display advertising, email marketing, and search; how to calculate CTR for each; the actual benchmark ranges by industry and channel; and a practical, operator-led list of techniques for improving CTR.
