Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Several studies have been conducted to assess the perceptions of grammatical error types and determine whether such errors hinder business professionals in the workplace. To extend such valuable studies, this paper endeavors to investigate students’ awareness of the importance of using proper grammar in workplace communication. Furthermore, it explores how grammar learning approaches shape their understanding and self-perceived application of grammatical knowledge in professional settings. In addition, it attempts to identify key challenges that may hinder students’ implementation of proper grammar in the job market. Thus, this study is grounded on two relevant theories: Planned Behavior and Communicative Competence. These theories were incorporated to predict and understand students’ behaviors and communicative abilities when using the English language in real-life context. In the development of the theoretical framework, a quantitative approach was applied, using a structured questionnaire survey comprising 27 Likert scale items administered to university students. The results indicated that most students are aware of the use of proper grammar in the workplace. However, the results demonstrate a perceived gap between students’ beliefs and their perceived confidence, particularly in spoken workplace communication. These results have significant pedagogical implications, highlighting the importance of adopting teaching approaches and designing activities that stimulate workplace communication activities to develop students’ linguistic competence and improve their workplace communication.
