A novel instrument for operando high-energy surface X-ray diffraction studies of electrochemical interfaces with integrated sample preparation
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: We present a new instrument that combines a diffractometer for operando high-energy surface X-ray scattering studies of electrochemical interfaces in hanging meniscus geometry with capabilities for sample preparation by inductive heating. This setup allows rapid sample transfer under inert gas atmosphere between the preparation stage and the electrochemical cell, resulting in significant improvements in sample quality and electrochemical response as well as more efficient usage of beamtime. Proof-of-concept electrochemical and diffraction experiments on Pt(111) demonstrate the successful implementation of the instrument and its suitability for operando HESXRD studies. The modular design facilitates the integration of additional preparation and characterization tools, providing a versatile platform for future correlative multi-modal studies.
