Abstract: The article provides a theoretical analysis of the pedagogical conditions for improving students' self-directed learning competence in higher education. Four components of the competence (motivational, cognitive, activity-organizational and reflective-evaluative) and seven conditions – individualization, tutoring, methodological support, a digital learning environment, reflection, process-oriented assessment and a supportive motivational climate – are examined on the basis of the works of M. Knowles, B. Zimmerman, L.S. Vygotsky, D.R. Garrison, P. Pintrich, E. Deci and R. Ryan, P. Black and D. Wiliam, J. Hattie and H. Timperley and others. A four-stage pedagogical model is proposed; it has not yet been tested empirically.
