Abstract: This study describes the improvement of learning engagement and the ability to analyze intrinsic elements and moral values in legend texts among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Bae Kudus through the use of reconstructed Jepara Regency legend texts as teaching material. The research problem stemmed from students’ low ability to analyze folklore structure because the teaching materials, archaic-language hikayat, were less contextual. This study employed a collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) design following the Kemmis and McTaggart model across two cycles with 35 students as subjects. Data were collected through essay tests, engagement observation, interviews, and field notes, then analyzed descriptively using quantitative techniques and Miles and Huberman’s interactive qualitative model. The mean score increased from 69.80 (pre-cycle) to 77.31 in Cycle I (+7.51 points) and 83.80 in Cycle II (+6.49 points). Classical mastery rose from 60.00% to 77.14% and 82.86%, while the proportion of students in the good engagement category or higher rose from 77.1% to 82.9%. The Cycle II refinements, namely written prompting questions and stronger verification guidance, were carried out even though the quantitative success criteria had already been met in Cycle I, because reflection indicated that the ability to interpret moral value and message remained relatively low. The study concludes that the use of reconstructed Jepara Regency legend texts over two cycles was followed by improved learning engagement and students’ ability to analyze intrinsic elements and values, with moral value and message analysis remaining areas that need further reinforcement.
