Abstract: Collaboration and creativity need to be trained from the early grades, yet an initial observation at SD Muhammadiyah Buya Hamka, Metro Timur, Lampung, showed that collaborative learning was not optimal and students’ creativity was low. This study examined the effect of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model through cake decorating practice on the collaboration and creativity of first-grade students, separately and simultaneously. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was used with a purposive sample of 22 students in the experimental class and 23 in the control class. Pretest and posttest data were analyzed using t-tests, Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon tests, N-Gain, effect sizes, and MANOVA/MANCOVA. Posttest means of the experimental class were higher than those of the control class for collaboration (90.68 vs 66.96) and creativity (95.45 vs 74.35). N-Gain was in the high category in the experimental class (0.82 and 0.92) and in the medium category in the control class (0.39 and 0.52). The differences were significant (p < 0.001), with Hedges’ g between 3.87 and 4.51, and the multivariate effect was significant (Pillai’s Trace = 0.869; p < 0.001). Posttest data were not normally distributed and scores clustered at high values, so effect sizes should be interpreted cautiously. CTL through cake decorating practice was associated with higher collaboration and creativity.
