Abstract: Fifth-grade students are often fluent and loud in informal situations yet passive and hesitant when speaking during lessons. This classroom action research examined role playing in learning pantun (traditional Indonesian verse) and announcements to improve speaking skills and engagement. Fourteen students of class VA at a private elementary school in Salatiga took part from 27 August to 15 September 2026 in a pre-cycle and two two-meeting cycles. Students performed conversational texts the researcher composed from the lesson content. A peer rated speaking (five-aspect rubric) and engagement (five indicators); analysis was descriptive. The mean score rose from 58.9 to 66.8 and 77.0, and students rated Skilled or Very Skilled increased from 21.4% to 42.9% and 85.7%, passing the 75% criterion in Cycle II. Engagement rose from 34.3% to 49.3% and 67.9%. Intonation gained most in Cycle II, after role movement was added on the teacher’s suggestion. Self-confidence stayed the weakest indicator (28.6%), and two students remained below the Skilled category. Confidence building needs further attention.
