The Role of Customer Reviews in E-Commerce Decision-Making: How Review Quantity, Star Ratings, and Negative Feedback Affect Online Buyer Trust

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Shoppers cannot touch a product through a screen, so they lean on what other buyers have said about it. This paper looks at three features of customer reviews, namely how many there are, how many stars they average, and how much negative feedback they contain, and asks how each one shapes trust and, through trust, the decision to buy. Drawing on published research in marketing and information systems, we argue that the three cues work together rather than separately. A large number of reviews suggests that many people have tested the product, a high average rating signals quality, and a few honest complaints make the whole picture believable. Ratings close to perfect can backfire, and some criticism often helps more than it hurts. The discussion is conceptual and rests on earlier studies, not on new data. We close with practical advice for online retailers and note where the evidence is still thin.
