Abstract: A job application letter is a workplace functional text taught at the senior high school level. This study aimed to describe the job application letter writing ability of Grade XII students at SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru and to interpret the results in light of letter structure and language conventions. A descriptive quantitative approach with a performance test was applied to 36 students in one class. The letters were scored by the teacher using a rubric on a 0–100 scale; the available data were each student's final score, analysed with descriptive statistics. The mean score was 95.56 (SD = 2.82; median = 98; range 90–98), all students (100%) fell in the "very good" category, and 52.8% obtained a score of 98. Under a stricter category scale, 44.4% of students moved to the "good" category, so the conclusion depends on the category thresholds. The concentration of scores at the upper end of the scale indicates a possible ceiling effect or lenient scoring, so the scores are better read as high achievement according to the teacher's assessment than as evidence of uniform ability. Because indicator-level scores were not available, interpretations about letter structure and language conventions are tentative and rely on the literature. Future studies should use an analytic rubric with indicator-level scores, more than one rater, and a larger sample.
