Abstract: Speaking is a core part of how young children develop language, and it is the main way they share their ideas, thoughts, and emotions. Preliminary observations indicated that the speaking skills of 5–6-year-old children at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Kindergarten, Pasar Ujung Batu, had not developed optimally, as shown by limited vocabulary, low fluency, and low confidence in speaking in front of peers. This research sought to find out how role playing influences the speaking skills of 5–6-year-olds. TThis was a quantitative study that applied a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent pretest–posttest groups, one of which served as the control. Thirty children from two classes took part and were chosen purposively. Class B2 (n = 15) formed the experimental group and did role-playing activities themed “Aku Jadi YouTuber Cilik” (I Am a Little YouTuber), while Class B4 (n = 15) acted as the control group and received conventional learning. Speaking skills were observed using a 12-item checklist and anecdotal notes, then analyzed with an independent samples t-test after the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and Levene’s homogeneity test. The mean score of the experimental class increased from 22.33 to 31.87 (42.69%), while that of the control class increased from 21.07 to 28.07 (33.23%). The posttest difference between the two classes was significant, t(28) = −2.984, p = 0.006, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.09).Overall, role playing significantly influences the speaking skills of children aged 5–6, so it can be used as a fresh, context-based way to teach language in early childhood settings.
