Abstract: The ability to determine main ideas is a fundamental competence in Indonesian language learning and underlies students’ reading literacy. This study aimed to determine the effect of the instructional video “Ide Pokok dan Ide Pendukung” (Main Idea and Supporting Idea) on fourth-grade students’ understanding of main ideas in Chapter 2 “Tugasku” at SDN 05 Kota Bengkulu (a public elementary school in Bengkulu City, Indonesia). A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design was used. The participants were 24 fourth-grade students of the school, and the video was integrated into a Discovery Learning lesson following the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach. Data were collected with a written test (score range 0–100) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the normalized gain (N-Gain). The mean score rose from 62,50 (SD = 13,59) in the pretest to 85,42 (SD = 16,93) in the posttest. Posttest scores were significantly higher than pretest scores (Z = −4,07, p < 0,001, r = 0,83), with 21 of 24 students improving and none declining. The mean N-Gain was 0,6824, in the medium category; 14 students (58,3%) achieved high gain, 6 (25,0%) medium, and 4 (16,7%) low. The findings indicate that the instructional video is associated with a large improvement in students’ understanding of main ideas. Because the design had no control group, the results should be interpreted cautiously and tested further with a controlled experiment.
