Factors influencing the acceptance of food biotechnology.

Year: 2000
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study aimed to quantify some influential factors regarding the acceptance of food biotechnology. A mail survey was conducted and the questionnaires were completed by 434 people. Many respondents indicated an unfavourable attitude towards the use of genetic engineering in food production. Perceptions of risk and benefit were the major drivers of acceptance. Moral issues were an important issue, too. Uncertainty about possible consequences of genetically modified food and trust in various sources of information were also considered. Public acceptance of new biotechnology will be the major determinant of its future role in society.
