Year: 2026
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The growth of the global Muslim tourist market in recent years has underscored the importance of developing Muslim-friendly tourism, particularly by making halal food a key element of the travel experience. Halal food not only fulfills the religious obligations of Muslim tourists but also contributes to the satisfaction, trust, loyalty, and competitiveness of tourist destinations. This study aims to analyze the role of halal food in Muslim-friendly tourism through a systematic literature review (SLR) approach. Data were obtained from the Scopus database using keywords related to halal food, halal tourism, and Muslim-friendly tourism from 2010 to 2026. A total of 102 data points were retrieved, and after screening, 20 were reviewed. Literature selection is carried out systematically through the stages of identification, screening, feasibility assessment, and inclusion of relevant articles. The results show that publications on halal food in Muslim-friendly tourism have increased significantly over the past decade, reflecting the increasing academic attention to halal tourism. The analyzed literature revealed several main themes: the availability of halal food, halal certification, consumer trust, tourist satisfaction, destination image, and tourism competitiveness. Countries with large Muslim populations, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, are important contributors to the development of halal tourism research. However, there are still research gaps, particularly regarding the integration of halal culinary experiences, the use of halal digital technology, halal food service innovation, and the sustainable development of halal gastronomy. This research provides an academic contribution by presenting a comprehensive overview of the development of halal food studies in the context of Muslim-friendly tourism. In practical terms, these findings can serve as a basis for policymakers, destination managers, and tourism industry players in designing a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable halal tourism strategy
